Matt graduated from Virginia Tech in 2004 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Go Hokies! He founded MSA in early 2021 after 17 years working as an architect on both the East and West coasts.

Matt’s experience centers on large- and small-scale commercial projects, religious institutions, automotive facilities, single- and multi-family residential, restaurant designs, commercial interiors, and adaptive re-use developments.

His background consists of guiding large project teams through complex design and construction challenges, often within rigid timeframes and budgetary concerns. His focus on clear and concise communication between team members facilitates project completion on time and within budget. “Good design is all about good communication. A successful project is one where everyone on the team is talking about challenges and sharing ideas about how to overcome them.” Matt’s passion lies in the close client interactions that make architectural projects successful.

Matt has also held a real estate license in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 2012 and has been an Accredited Professional with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) since 2008.

A proud Louisiana native, Lane earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Louisiana State University in 2014. Lane’s enthusiasm for the breadth of the engineering profession has led him to road design, structural analysis and inspections, commercial site planning, aquatics, drainage modeling, and more.

Lane began his career at a midsize design firm developing site plans for a large variety of residential, commercial, and industrial uses. With the benefit of his diverse work history, Lane quickly honed his skills as a site designer, learning to expedite the permitting process and finding creative ways to resolve challenging site constraints.

After several years in the private sector, Lane accepted a position as Principal Engineer at Hazen and Sawyer where he managed municipal drainage improvement projects for neighborhoods and wastewater treatment facilities. In this role, Lane collaborated with designers from all disciplines to manage complex developments and successfully navigate demanding project timelines and budgets.

Lane joined MSA in early 2022, where he leads engineering design, consulting, and zoning services for commercial and residential land development projects. Lane enjoys problem solving, clear communication, and working smarter. He is a software wiz, a data sleuth, and a holistic thinker experienced in taking projects from concept to reality.

Aaron joined MSA in September of 2022. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a Structural focus.

As the son of a custom homebuilder on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia, Aaron was given a toolbelt and a hammer early on and taught the skill of carpentry and residential framing. This fieldwork instilled a strong work ethic and a detail-oriented mentality that has served him well in his engineering career. Aaron began his career in Richmond where he worked for Balzer and Associates drafting and designing a variety of structural project types including residential, multi-family, adaptive re-use, industrial, hospitality, and retail. He earned his professional engineer license from the Commonwealth of Virginia in April of 2019 before moving to Northern Virginia in 2021 to work as a structural project manager for Cates Engineering. There he gained valuable experience in the design of large-scale multi-family and high-end hospitality projects.

With nearly ten years of experience in the building design industry, Aaron strives to consistently put forth the most comprehensive, straightforward, and cost-effective plans to satisfy the needs of each individual client. With applicable experience in both the field and in the office, he knows that a designer must always consider how a project will be brought to life from the drawings that he creates. Aaron is a charismatic and easygoing guy that enjoys working directly with co-workers, clients, and contractors alike.
